Matt Rees' Review: OUTSIDE THE LANES

Mann is "now a professional writer and it shows. She has penned a gripping and heartfelt account of life as an elite swimmer – both the experience of being one of the sport’s demigods and the devastation that comes with having your Olympics dreams crushed."

WOWSA Interview with Becca Mann: Inside Her New Book “Outside the Lanes”

"Outside the Lanes, goes way beyond recounting Mann's career. The book reveals the messy, often painful realities of what it means to pursue something relentlessly. With a lot of clarity and eloquence, she shares an unsentimental account of coming so close to her Olympic dreams—three times — all the while holding readers at a distance and still inviting them alongside her to question issues of identity and ambition."

Reader Views: OUTSIDE THE LANES by Becca Mann Review

"I am very impressed by Mann's authenticity and transparency while detailing her emotional and physical struggles. For instance, she did a thorough job describing the way her intrusive thoughts crept in and latched on to her (and that the more you try to suppress them, the stronger they become). I could relate to her struggle with OCD in many ways, especially due to the fact that she struggled with mostly obsessions instead of compulsions (which is also very helpful for the reader who may be unfamiliar with the complexities of the disorder). "This book is a fantastic resource for any swimmer, or non-swimmer, dealing with mental health issues. It speaks of what Mann was often thinking and how that differed from what she said or what her actions were. Anyone facing this battle will benefit just from reading Mann’s inner dialogue in big moments.

The book, too, is a light and quick read, showing incredible balance."
